The Adversary
(Preview)
Hi All Please forgive my spelling. The role of Adversary was given/appointed taken by Melkor. Despite his best efforts, he only ever furthered the aims of Eru. It seems to me that free will was denied to this Valar. Almost as if his appointed role was to unite the free peoples against him. But here's t...

2 Minas Tirith?
(Preview)
I was recently reading through the Silmarillion when I came upon the creation of a watchtower by Finrod in the first age, it was known as Minas Tirith. Does anyone know how the citadel of Gondor came to bear the same name?

Indepth Discussion of the Olvar of Middle-earth and Valinor
(Preview)
This is a thread to discuss the Olvar of Tolkien's Worlds. Unlike the Trivia Thread, which should have SHORT answers without a lot of Dialogue, This is where you want to delve into the books. I have noticed that a lot of people will take the easy route and go to Wikipedia, which is alright with me, but I rea...

Orcs under the Sun
(Preview)
In The Battle Of The Pelennor Fields the orcs of Mordor appear to fight on after the Sun shines (a great wind blew, and the rain went North). The hosts of Mordor, which I would say included orcs (orcs that are said, after Aragorn is revealed, to have hated the Sunlight), were actually heartened by the Bla...

Perception of characters changing as we change

Hump de bump I'm now a grumpy middle aged man. In my youth I adored th Elves for their vigour, their beuty and strength. Now they seem a bit tiresome , always looking backwards, never at where they are or going. Aloof Anyway, now I adore men....hmmmm as a race. The death of Boromir seems to affect me more. H...

A child of his time
(Preview)
Here's a thing Yer man Tolkien grew lived and died in a more inocent time. By which I mean a reserved, moral and simpler era. Where Hemp was for ropes and gay meant happy. How would the works have differed if Toklien was a child of the MTV generation ? They told me , "Filli stand by the jams" I di...

Hi guys. I hope this is the correct forum for this question, and I hope you don't mind me butting in here without so much as a by-your-leave (I'll post an intro thread soon!) I also posted this question in a non-Tolkien forum of my acquaintance. My apologies if this is an unacceptable cross-post. Whi...

Alright I am doing this by memory, so tell me if I get something wrong. Aragorn said at Parth Galen that Sauron did not use his right name or allowed it to be spoken, so why did the Mouth of Sauron introduce himself with that name? And also I think that he even referred to his master as Sauron the Great, or som...

resolving "Middle earth as our earth" with Tolkien's religiosity
(Preview)
It's pretty well-known that Tolkien had long toyed with device of making Middle Earth an earlier, long forgotten version of *our* earth. This is explicit in the tales of Aelfwine/Eriol, the notion that Tolkien somehow got his hands on "The Red Book", and little things like Tolkien mak...

Why is Frodo seen as the Hero?
(Preview)
One question has always nagged at me about the final moments of the "destroying" of the ring. After the journey, the search, the end of the fellowship, Frodo failed to throw the ring in. In the end, taken over by the ring itself, he refused to rid the world of the ring. If not for Gollum, the ent...

I know most new topics are a question, but this one is more of a statement. I've heard the question "what happened to Shadowfax when Gandalf sailed sailed away?" And just now came across the answer in Christopher Tolkien's the end of the third age.

Morgoth's Children- speculative

I always felt that JRR could write about, absolute evil....in only a palatable way. True he wrote the works in a more innocent time. I also feel that although he wrote about unspeakable evil, he being such a good person, did not understand "evil". (I'm only vaguely nasty...but I'd shock JR...

The Common Speech
(Preview)
Hey there. Are we to assume that the common speech is actually English, or that the inhabitants of Arda speak something else, and Tolkein simply wrote in English? The reason I ask this is that the place-names seem to be in a langauge that is not similar to English at all. The placenames of the hobbits are...

"The Complete Guide to Middle-earth" VS. "The Complete Tolkien Companion"

I have a question. As a matter of fact, I've been pondering this for a very long time, so actually I don't know why I did not seek an answer until now. I bought some time ago JEA Tyler's 'The Complete Tolkien Companion', which is sort of an encyclopedia of Tolkien's world, with a large number of names which...
