And thou, Melkor, shalt see that no theme may be played that hath not its uttermost source in me, nor can any alter the music in my despite. For he that attempteth this shall prove but mine instrument in the devising of things more wonderful, which he himself hath not imagined.

Welcome members to the first edition of the "Riddles in the Dark" thread. The basic idea of the thread is a riddle-based trivia thread. And because it is very similar to trivia the rules are also the same: Just as in trivia we will have different topics. At the end of the time period, the thread will be closed and a new one opened, with a new topic.
Here's how it works: 1. You take a stab at the current riddle. 2. If your guess is correct, you get to post the next riddle. 3. If your guess is wrong, the riddle stands. 4. If you do not wish to post a riddle after a correct answer, you may yield the floor to whoever wants it.
Rules *All questions MUST pertain to the set topic. *Wait for the riddle asker to confirm your guess, even if you are sure it's right, before posting the next question. *All forum rules apply *Any of the above rules broken will result in penalty which can be found in the FAQ. *Have fun! *Only if a new riddle is not introduced within two days after the previous was answered correctly can someone else post a new riddle. *And a last rule, please keep the riddles clear and simple. Try to avoid any very old or complicated words as not all members have the same level in English. And also try to make sure that the words in the riddle only apply for one answer, as there are cases were certain things are valid for more then one place or character in Middle-earth. *It would be nicer if the lines of the riddle would rhyme, but this is not compulsory. First topic: Dwarves (Dwarves as a people, individual Dwarves, habits of Dwarves, history of Dwarves, establishments of Dwarves, etc.) I would normally leave an open floor at the beginning of the thread, but only to get you started I will ask first. He is a father of his folk And his power is great indeed In Arda again he'll walk And his people he will lead Six times he left the world And Six times returned His story is not yet fully told But it is approaching its end.
He was one of the first fathers of the dwarfs and their leader. He died and was reincarnated six times. Not too sure about the last two lines but I'm pretty sure the answer is Durin.
Totally correct the story is not yet fully told refers to Durin VII that lived in Khazad-Dum in the early centuries of the Fourth Age. but its approaching its end means that he was the last time he would return in the lotr appendix he appears as Durin VII and Last
Nice to see that the thread is going well. About the possbile topics, I personally see no real point in that there were many Dwarves in ME, and many things realted to them. for example you could make riddles about mithril or stuff as they had a lot to do with the life of dwarves
Eowyn - that is hard. I will however try and piece it together.
Must be connected to Dwarves and is a friend of Elves - Gimli do you mean? He lived in the glittering caves in the fourth age I beleive and is a friend of Elves.

This looks quite good TM. May I suggest one change? Instead of having a new subject every week like the trivia, why don't we just keep a subject going until it clearly has nothing more to offer? Otherwise your soon going to run out of subjects as they have to be very broad.
hmm...dunno what to say... now indeed...perhaps no topic at all would be easier for the riddle makers, but harder to answer as you have no clues at all...I dunno must see how the thread developes
anyway, just wanted to say I'll be away for the next 2 weeks, so perhaps one of the Maia could take over the thread...perhaps Lady Ungoliant as she was the one to allow this thread in the first place, or perhaps, Lord Eonwe if he had enough time...I dunno anyway, I have decided not to make any modifications in the rules for now, and I will be eager to see how the thread works this way If another idea proves better, I will change the rules upon returning
umm...I think that is for the moderation team to decide glorfindel and, personally, I believe I am allowed to use the term "Lady" before Ungoliant, as she also is part of the moderation team.
