Gandalf and healing

I've always wondered why couldn't Gandalf heal folks who'd been hit by the Black Breath of the Nazgul. In Gondor they had to wait for Aragorn to take care of everyone (him and Elrond's sons). Did Gandalf not have any sort of healing power?

That's a good question.

We know that different Maia have different abilities in different areas, much like the Valar. Perhaps Olorin had no special abilities when it came to healing. Then again, he did heal one of the Eagles of an arrow wound but that may not have been by magic.

You would think a Maia of any description would have some magical healing abilities on some level or other. A thought provoking topic!

Was there a Maia who was assigned healing?

Nienna

Lady of Mercy. She was the tutor of Olórin (Gandalf), and weeps constantly. But she does not weep for herself; and those who hearken to her learn pity, and endurance in hope. Her tears are those of healing and pity, not of sadness, and often have potency; for example, she watered the Two Trees with her tears, and later washed the filth of Ungoliant away from them once they were destroyed. She was in favor of releasing Melkor after his sentence, not being able to see his evil nature. She has no spouse.

Estë

The patron Valië of healing is Estë. Rest is closely connected with her art: Her spouse, Irmo the younger, is the master of visions and dreams. In Lórien are his gardens in the land of the Valar, and they are the fairest of all places in the world, filled with many spirits. Estë is the gentle, healer of hurts and of weariness. Grey is her raiment; and rest is her gift.

I had forgotten about Nienna. You would think that Gandalf would know a thing or two about healing. However, he only seems to specialise in magic involving lights, fire etc.

What about when Pippin looked into the Palantir and got into a weird trance. Didn't Gandalf awake him from that? Or was that only in the film?
