What became of the Dwarves?
(Preview)
Hi all Well at the start of the fourth age, the elves departed or those who stayed in time faded. Yet what of the dwarves ? By all accounts the Lonely Mountain was thriving. People relocted to the Gimli's glittering caves. Moiria was free of the Balrog and ripe for the taking. So what became of the Dwar...

A hero's sacrifice
(Preview)
Hi Guys Please forgive my spelling In another topic, I was wondering about the romance of the works. A discussion about heroism and sacrifice was sparked. So here's my question ...who gave up the most for the greater good. I'll start the ball rolling by choosing Elros. Although there isn't much to go o...

A romantic notion
(Preview)
Hi all I hope you're well I've always thought Tolkiens books were romantic....not so much in a boy and girl way but in a broader sense. There is something about the idea of people being more than their station that I love. Perhaps a silly but similar feeling is when you watch the film Braveheart....a man...

(Preview)
Hi all Please excuse my spelling as I'm dyslexic ( tricky word). Your thoughts please on Aule. Two Maiar , Sauron and Sauraman.....both of his train. Both in like mind. Both powerful and both fell. You'd think that after Sauron....the last Maiar you'd send would be from the likes of Aule to help Middle...

Has anyone seen in an early copy of The Hobbit a description of a house on "the slimy rock" that Gollum called home? My copy of 1972 doesn't , but I have an excerpt in a magazine from 1938 that has a house on it.

The nature of Sauron
(Preview)
Ever since I first read Lord of the Rings, one question has been bothering me that I remember from time to time. There are many of you here who know much, much more than I do, so I'd like to have your opinions. Sauron was a Maia. Not one of the Valar as Melkor was, but only one of the Maiar. There were countless...

He caught fish in...

Ok, this is like scholarly minutia, but it belongs to me. Trotter's name was changed to Strider (among others). Good choice most would agree. The development of Aragorn's character and the need for a less "hobbity" name are detailed in the History of Middle Earth at length. But as far as I c...
